Carlos Mauricio Pliego, MÉXICO

CM Pliego’s paintings are made with oil and charcoal on canvas. They are figurative in nature, and their subjects describe everyday life, often including self-portraiture. Pliego has a defined style characterized by blurred patches that suggest elements, and loose strokes that indicate contours. His palette consists of pale, tinted colors, with minimal saturation applied in small areas, depending on his intentions.

Pliego was born and raised in Toluca, State of Mexico, and since 2013 had been working independently in Mérida, Yucatán.

His interest in art motivated him to move to Instituto Allende, in San Miguel Allende, Gto. to learn at the Centro de Artes, and later at the Escuela Superior de Artes de Yucatán, ESAY. However, his passion for painting drew him away from institutions, and he began focusing all his time on painting, starting the Ruts Workshop, a small, art-rich space where his fellow artists would gather to work, collaborate, and exhibit their works collectively. During his time in Mérida, he also exhibited at Tapanco Centro Cultural, Galería Mérida, Galería la Eskalera, Pasaje Picheta, Centro Cultural Mid Guía, and Galería el Zapote.
