JOSE LUIS COUOH, MÉXICO
José Luis Couoh is an impressionist Mexican painter who narrates scenes of rural life in Yucatán through impasto landscapes. His short brushstrokes suggest the influence of impressionist and expressionist currents. He depicts scenes evoke the warmth and the feeling of spaciousness of the Yucatecan lands. To reflect the beauty of sunsets in the field, he uses bright colors that suggest movement and allow the viewer to imagine the details.
In addition to landscapes, the artist presents a series of oil portraits with female models. The way he works with color predominates over the form, the vigorous brushstrokes give texture and the mixture of tonality and hues in short rhythms on the canvas. The models are portrayed up to the clavicles or torso, and he paints the shapes and facial forms simple with expressions merely suggested.
Similarly, José Luis emphasizes the language of the female body in his charcoal drawings on paper. In these, the frantic repetition of long strokes adds depth and enhances the curvature of the bodies.
As in his oil portraits, the expression on the models’ faces denotes serenity as they are of few details.

José Luis Couoh was born in the city of Tekax in the south of Yucatán, he has lived for many years in Mérida where he works proudly promoting his cultural heritage.
After having graduated from the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, Yucatan in 1988, José Luis Couoh’s career took flight in exhibitions and festivals nationwide, in the most important cities of the Mexican southeast.
However, since 2007 his works have found a place in private collections and exhibitions around the world, in cities such as Amsterdam, New Delhi, Hong Kong and New York.
