“Bedouin Life in Egypt from Metal Etching Plates”

Robert Gutowski’s metal etchings are inspired by his experiences in Egypt, capturing Bedouin markets and the traditional feast activities following Ramadan. Born in New York, Mr. Gutowski studied art in his early twenties before leaving his country to teach in cities such as Santo Domingo, Bangkok, and Cairo. After nearly twenty years in Cairo, he traveled widely and observed local traditions, including visits to towns like El Areesh on the western shore of the Red Sea.

Some of his works are detailed with chiaroscuro, while others depict complete scenes with only a few lines. In two pieces, the artist incorporated blue ink, demonstrating his technical and creative versatility. The series as a whole combines technical exploration, skill, and a distinctive line style refined over the years.

In his depictions of the Eid feast, moments for shisha, and the custom of enjoying Arabic coffee prepared over a charcoal brazier and served from copper pots, Robert translates his observations into dynamic compositions that reflect the rhythms of daily life.
