“Gold Series” Exhibition
“Gold Series” presents the most recent work of Carlos Mauricio Pliego, created in Toluca, State of Mexico. The central theme of this series is the rediscovery of his homeland:
“They are illustrated elements, some that I have had since childhood, others that I found in Merida, and others that were already here.
It’s about awareness of being a family after so much hunger.
A portrayal of transition. Of what we were before.” —CM Pliego
The shift to a brighter studio allowed the artist to refine his use of diluted tones and subtle layering, enhancing his technique of loose, gestural strokes and blotches. These visual elements gradually reveal figures that may suggest human, animal, or imagined beings. Rather than offering a literal narrative, the paintings evoke presence through brief marks and soft contrasts.
Some works also contain faint traces of text, signs, or letters—fragments that seem to surface organically as part of the painting process. These inscriptions add a personal, elusive layer to the compositions, inviting viewers to interpret or simply feel their meaning.
While the series focuses on recent production, it also includes earlier works that allow viewers to trace the evolution of the artist’s practice, from more gestural abstractions to a quieter, more atmospheric figuration.
