Gold Series Exhibition by CM Pliego
Gold Series marks a significant point in the artistic evolution of CM Pliego (Carlos M Pliego), bringing together recent works created in his hometown of Toluca, Estado de México. With this series, the artist explores themes of memory, identity, and rediscovery of place.
According to the artist:
“They are illustrated elements, some that I have had since childhood, others that I found in Mérida, and others that were already here.
It’s about awareness of being a family after so much hunger.
A portrayal of transition. Of what we were before.” —CM Pliego
The change to a brighter studio environment allowed Pliego to refine his use of diluted tones and subtle layering. As a result, his technique of loose strokes and color blotches became more atmospheric. Figures—sometimes human, sometimes animal or imagined—begin to emerge gradually. Rather than telling a literal story, the works evoke presence and emotion through soft contrasts and gestural marks.
In several paintings, faint traces of letters, words, or signs appear. These inscriptions, integrated seamlessly into the surface, introduce a personal and symbolic layer. They do not dominate the composition; instead, they invite interpretation and contribute to a deeper visual narrative.
While most of the pieces belong to his recent production, the exhibition also includes earlier works. This selection allows viewers to follow the transition from a gestural abstraction to a quieter, more symbolic figuration.
With Gold Series, CM Pliego moves closer to abstraction, but without abandoning the emotional depth and symbolic language that characterize his work.
